Welcome to the Health Sciences Department. The Department offers various medical courses some of which are approved and registered by Professional Boards and some are under the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology. There are two Boards under which some programmes run: the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) and the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board (KMLTTB).

Prospective trainees must meet the entry requirements for the programme they wish to be admitted into.

The Department has a team of qualified and competent trainers and a student population of over 250 at present.

The Department has four laboratories equipped with modern equipment for training and research. The Equipment were donated by the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Education. The Department also has a Drug Dispensing store for training the Pharmaceutical Technology trainees.

DIPLOMA COURSES

  1. DIPLOMA IN PHARMACEUTICAL TECHNOLOGY

Approved by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (Reg NO PB/COL/014/07)

The course is designed for KCSE graduates. To qualify for admission, the student must have a mean grade of C (plain) with C in Mathematics/Physics, Biology/Biological Sciences, Chemistry/Physical Sciences, and English/Kiswahili

The Course takes 3 years after which the trainees sit for the Kenya National Examinations Council exanimations. The students sit for internal end of term and end of stage examinations.

After the stage two examinations, the trainees undertake a three months Industrial Attachment to expose them to the real world of work where they apply the skills learnt in class. Assessment is conducted by the trainers and industrial supervisors during this period.

  1. DIPLOMA IN MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY

Approved by the KMLTTB

The course is designed for KCSE graduates. To qualify for admission, the student must have a mean Grade of C (plain) with C in Mathematics/Physics, Biology/Biological sciences, Chemistry/Physical Sciences, and English/Kiswahili or a pass in Certificate in Medical Laboratory Technology.

MASINDE MULIRO UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (MMUST)

DIPLOMA COURSES

  1. DIPLOMA IN COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

The course is designed for KCSE graduates. To qualify for admission the student must have a mean Grade of C (plain) with C- in Biology, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili; D+ in Mathematics/Physics or a pass in Certificate in Community Health and Development.

The Course takes 3 years. The trainees sit for the MMUST exanimations every term.

After completion of course work, the trainees undertake a three months Industrial Attachment to expose them to the real world of work where they apply the skills learnt in class. Assessment is conducted by the trainers and industrial supervisors during this period.

  1. DIPLOMA IN MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

The course is designed for KCSE graduates. To qualify for admission, the student must have a mean Grade of C (plain) with C- in Biology, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili; D+ in Mathematics/Physics or a pass in Certificate in Medical Biotechnology.

The Course takes 3 years. The trainees sit for the MMUST exanimations every term.

CERTIFICATE COURSES

  1. CERTIFICATE IN COMMUNITY HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

The Course takes 2 years. The trainees sit for the MMUST exanimations every term.

After completion of course work, the trainees undertake a three months Industrial Attachment to expose them to the real world of work where they apply the skills learnt in class. Assessment is conducted by the trainers and industrial supervisors during this period.

  1. CERTIFICATE IN MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

The course is designed for KCSE graduates. To qualify for admission, the student must have a mean Grade of D+ (plus) with D in Biology, Chemistry, English/Kiswahili and Mathematics.

The Course takes 2 years. The trainees sit for the MMUST exanimations every term.

After completion of course work, the trainees undertake a three months Industrial Attachment to expose them to the real world of work where they apply the skills learnt in class. Assessment is conducted by the trainers and industrial supervisors during this period
